RCM in a Nutshell: The 7 Questions Every Reliability Engineer Must Ask

RCMCMRPStrategy

What Is RCM?

Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a systematic process for determining what must be done to ensure that physical assets continue to do what their users require in their present operating context.

The 7 RCM Questions

1. What are the functions and performance standards?

Define what the asset is supposed to do and how well it should perform. Example: "Pump shall deliver 100 GPM at 50 PSI with ±5% accuracy."

2. In what ways can it fail?

Identify all possible functional failures — not just physical breakdown. Example: "Fails to deliver required flow" or "Delivers flow but at wrong pressure."

3. What causes each functional failure?

Trace root causes. Example: "Impeller wear," "Cavitation," "Suction line blockage."

4. What happens when each failure occurs?

Describe the failure effects. Example: "Downstream process stops," "Product quality affected," "Operator safety risk."

5. In what way does each failure matter?

Classify consequences: Safety, Environmental, Operational, Economic. This is the KEY to RCM.

6. What should be done to prevent each failure?

Define proactive maintenance tasks: Condition monitoring, preventive work, redesign. Example: "Monthly vibration analysis," "Annual impeller inspection."

7. What if we can't prevent it?

Define reactive plans: "If impeller wear is detected, schedule replacement during next planned downtime."

Why RCM Works

RCM shifts maintenance from "fix it when it breaks" to "keep it from breaking in ways that matter." It prioritizes consequences — safety, environmental, operational, and economic — not just failure frequency.

RCM Implementation Steps

  1. Select critical equipment (start with 20% that drives 80% of problems)
  2. Assemble cross-functional team (operators, maintenance, engineers)
  3. Work through the 7 questions systematically
  4. Document findings in a structured format
  5. Implement recommended tasks and track effectiveness
  6. Review annually and refine as you learn

🏆 RCM is the foundation of the CMRP certification's reliability pillar. Mastering the 7 questions is essential for the exam and for real-world reliability engineering.
